Styling a Small Living Room

A small living room is not a problem to be solved with more furniture. It is a room that rewards editing. The goal is not to make it look bigger than it is, but to make it feel comfortable and considered. A few decisions about light, layers and restraint do most of the work, and none of them require rebuilding anything.

Start with what you actually use

Before adding anything, look at how the room is used. If you mostly sit, read and watch television, that tells you what the room needs: a comfortable seat, somewhere to put a cup, good light and a surface or two. Everything else is optional. Clear out anything that has stopped earning its place, then add back slowly.

Light at three heights

A single bright ceiling light flattens a room. Layering light at different heights makes it feel deeper and warmer. Try a floor lamp for general light, a table lamp for a close-up glow, and something at eye level such as a candle in the evening.

Turning off the main light and using these instead is often all it takes to make a room feel finished.

Let a mirror do some work

A mirror placed opposite a window or beside a light source bounces light around the room. The Arched Wall Mirror works well on a wall that would otherwise feel blank. Hang it so the centre sits around eye level, and think about what it will reflect: a pleasant view or a plain wall is better than a pile of clutter.

Choose furniture that keeps floor visible

Seeing more floor makes a room feel larger. Pieces with visible legs and open space beneath them read lighter than ones that sit directly on the floor. A compact side table such as the Oak Side Table gives you somewhere to put a lamp and a cup without taking up much room. Use one or two surfaces rather than many small ones. If you are unsure about size, our guide to measuring before you buy will help.

Layer texture, not clutter

Soft furnishings add comfort without adding bulk. A Woven Cotton Throw over the arm of a sofa and one or two Linen Cushion Covers invite you to sit down. Keep the palette tight: two or three related colours and a mix of textures feel calmer than lots of competing patterns. Cotton and linen also suit the warmer months in Pakistan better than heavy fabrics.

Give the walls one idea

Walls can carry decoration so that surfaces do not have to. A single larger piece, like the Abstract Framed Print, creates a focal point and feels more intentional than a scatter of small frames. If you prefer a gallery wall, plan the layout on the floor first and keep the spacing even.

Hide the clutter honestly

Small rooms show mess quickly. Baskets are a simple answer: throws, magazines and remote controls disappear into something that looks nice in its own right. The Natural Storage Basket can live beside a sofa or under a console. Whatever you use, set a rule that things get a home and the room stays tidy more easily.

Add something alive

A plant, even one, makes a room feel lived in. A Stoneware Planter by a window gives a corner some presence. Choose a plant that suits the light you really have, and be honest about how often you will water it.

A simple order of work

  1. Edit what is already in the room.
  2. Fix the lighting at three heights.
  3. Add a mirror or a single large piece of art.
  4. Layer a throw and cushions.
  5. Add storage so surfaces stay clear.

You do not need to do all of this at once. Pick one change this week, live with it, then decide on the next. When you are ready to browse, start with the Living Room collection.
